 What is Montessori Education?
Montessori is a method of education named after Dr. Maria Montessori. Montessori education has worked in every culture throughout the world, with children from every level of intellectual ability and economic background.
Maria Montessori was born in 1870. In 1895, she became the first woman in Italy to obtain the degree of Doctor of Medicine. This background led Dr. Montessori to approach education more from the scientific level. To Dr. Montessori, education was a preparation for life, not merely a search for intellectual skills. She designed materials and techniques that advanced her method of educating all children and was constantly testing and retesting concepts that would promote a natural growth of learning in students.
Children in a Montessori class are allowed to develop at their own pace intellectually. What is made available to children are the keys and a road map to the exploration of the world. The children are shown a basic concept and then guided to build on that idea. Arranging groups of objects from left to right, top to bottom, large to small, concrete to abstract, forms a pattern that children carry over naturally to reading, writing, and calculating. Each skill is developed to interlock with another. The children learn each segment at their own pace, and move on to the next as each one is mastered.
